3-18-11 The book I am reading is called Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez. So far I have read up to page 34. My favorite quote from the book so far is "I loved Sapo because Sapo loved himself, and I wanted to be able to do that, to rely on myself for happiness.".
So far the book is about a man named Chino. Chino comes off as a very hardworking individual who tries not to get caught up in the wrong things that happen in his less than perfect neighborhood. He lives in a rough neighborhood so he does have street smarts and is doing what he can to get away from it all. He has a wife who doesn't like him hanging in the hood. His wife is pregnant. Sapo is a friend of Chinos. Chino grew up with him and they are both extremely loyal to one another. Sapo took Chino one night to meet a friend of his. Chino is currently being asked to get involved with a man named Bodega's vision to change the city he lives in. Chino is being asked to be apart of somewhat of a drug money powered renaissance in Puerto Rican Harlem. He is caught between being involved with people like Sapo and Bodega and being there for his very strict pregnant wife.
I feel like the characters in the book are all very different individuals. They all have there own characteristics. I like how Chino is a very normal person who just wants to do the right thing but I dislike how Bodega and Sapo are two people who have there heart in the right place but are ignorant to the fact that Chino is trying to get his life together and raise a family.
I feel like I am sometimes in the same situation as Chino. I don't always want to do the things my friends do sometimes but my loyalty to them and their loyalty to myself makes me want to do the things out of respect. Chino is caught in this situation where he has to choose from right and wrong and family over friends.
Some questions I have for the book are very simple ones. I am curious on what Chino will end up doing, and what Sapo is thinking about Chino taking a risk and joining himself and Bodega.
